I was listening to a podcast about millennials. One of the hosts said that young people were often too depressed to think about the environment. But it isn't just the environment. And it isn't just young people. There is a creeping doom that has infected everyone. From rich to poor, smart to dumb, religious to atheist, old to young, liberal to conservative, no group seems safe from ever more popular idea that the end is near.
And I would just like to say.

COULD YOU ALL CHEER THE HELL UP!!!!!!

Did you know for a hundred years that no cathedrals were built in Europe. Around 950 all the rich people got together and realized that cathedrals took a hundred years to build and God was going to end the world in 50 years. What a huge waste of money to start building a cathedral then. 1000 AD showed up and everyone was still there. They thought they got the date wrong. But any minute now... So they waited. Around 1050 they finally realized that the rapture was not imminent and they started building again.

Bubonic plague spread across Europe in the 14th century killing one thirds or more of the population; over 100 million people. Every one knew it was a judgement from God and the end was near. And then the end didn't come. Each successive generation was less and less susceptible to the plague.

Last century both world wars were called the war to end all wars. Many people in both thought the war would go on forever. The war, and I do mean "THE" war was too savage, too mechanical, too fueled by greed and hatred. Mankind was locked in a futile battle of two vast armed camps that would never agree. Yet neither side could ever defeat the other. We were Doomed! This was not the view of a tiny minority. Large groups of people in both wars came to believed the war would never end. Spoiler Alert! They ended. Most people in occupied Europe were certain the Nazis would win world war II. They didn't. After the war everyone thought Europe would take generations to recover. It didn't.

Aids was going to kill us all. We developed aids drugs. The ozone layer was disappearing. We changed aerosol sprays and the ozone layer grew back. Every child of seventies knew with an absolute certainty that we were going to die in a nuclear war with the U.S.S.R. . That nation no longer exists. During the great depression men killed their entire families because they believed they would never work again. Some died one month before the new deal started re-opening the factories.

Y2k and the Mayan doom are just the latest of world wide panics. The thing is, Unlike the Mayan Apocalypse, Y2K, the hole in the ozone, and World War One and Two were real. We saw a huge problem. we formulated a plan. WE DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT. The Problem WENT AWAY. Panic has never done anything but make things worse. Problems have solutions.

Panic changes history. Part of the reason Obama lost so big in the mid terms was terror over Ebola. Two weeks after the election Ebola was yesterday's news. It is not the president's job to handle every single little problem in real time. He is only one man and could not have done anything if he wanted to. The CDC has the responsibility of looking after disease. As a non-scientist and a non-doctor if Obama had interfered, he would have made things worse.
Ebola is a tropical disease running rampant in poor countries with political and racial unrest and little or no healthcare . Ebola could not have established itself in America. In the very worst case scenario poor handling could have lead to hundreds of people getting ill and a few dozen people dying. And many many things would have had to go wrong for THAT to happen. I am not upset about this because Obama was a democrat. I have seen republicans loose elections because of some panic that they were not responsible for. They had no power to do anything about the problem, and the problem ultimately didn't matter. Everyone was just worrying over nothing. Still cost that politician their job. Over nothing! Running around blaming people is just as bad as running around panicking. They are just two different versions of not solving the problem.

This sickness of-
everything is awful, nothing will get better, everyone is corrupt, humanity will eat itself, doom doom doom is destroying American. This cancer has to be cut out. There is no problem that can not be solved. Lets go out and solve them.

Hooray for happiness!  I'm a Baby Boomer.  I've seen fire and floods, hurricanes and wars, 9-11 and terrorist attacks, greed and forgiveness, good and bad.  God must have a good sense of humor to have humans around.  We are the most idiotic, wonderful, careless, loving, hating beings ever created.  We look for help from Above, from the Government, from Google, from anywhere but within ourselves.  I've survived great illness, advancing years, disco, and laundry that won't come clean.  I wish everyone would get real!  The only things that matter are ones that help you realize that life is for living, for giving, for loving, for helping.  Perhaps a new generation will appear that will not be self centered and not live for inane pursuits to fulfill endlessly large egos.  I don't know, but I'm happy for the live I have, for the man I love, for the friends who sustain me, for the artwork I create and am privileged to enjoy here.  Thank you for the kick in the butt you give to all the naysayers.  Time to get real.  Time to do something to make the world better.  No more whining like spoiled little children.  Oh wait!  Those spoiled little kids grew up to be spoiled adults!  God bless us all!  He's trying to, but too many of us have taken the easy say out that the Devil convinced us was the better way.  Too late for many.  He's still waiting for the rest of us to take a selfie with Him and keep it near our hearts.  Remember the Alamo!  Trump wants us to and isolate ourselves from the world.  He may be right.  He may be crazy.  But it just may be a lunatic we're looking for.  After all, he represents the anger in us all here in the USA.  But I hope kinder hearts prevail.
